I once worked in a high street clothing store. The boredom, mindlessness and repetition sucked the existence of energy, creativity and joy from my soul. “For now, I’ll wait here, I’ll wait here for now and although I don’t want to, it’s all I’ll let myself do”: too poor to escape, too drained to look elsewhere in my own time. It was the ache of a wisdom tooth, scared of growing up but not getting wiser (in fact, getting more dull-witted) and waving your dreams goodbye. The repetition of the beat from the Yamaha drum machine reflects the constant routine and robotic methods of folding clothes, consumption and replenishment, as well as the service spiel. However, the song has a release of freedom towards the end where the natural drums are introduced and the harmonies twin-peak – this is where young Liam leaves and conquers the world! The organ bass pedals in the bridge near the end make me smile – the tone is so low that it sounds like it’s playing the wrong notes. Nichola’s viola performance is particularly lovely and contributes a hearty folk element. For some reason the lead riff reminds me of both (the polar opposite) Terminator and a new theme for the Scottish weather forecast!
